Ella waterfall view is a homestay in Kithal Ella, a quiet village about 1 km from the centre of Ella, in the green hill country of Sri Lanka. As the name suggests, the setting is all about the view: the house looks out over gardens, green mountains and the river valley, and the waterfall on the hillside is a sight many guests remember long after they leave.
There are five room types, from doubles of around 19 m² to family rooms for four and deluxe doubles of 37 m². Every room has its own entrance, a private bathroom with shower, a balcony and a terrace with outdoor furniture, plus a tea and coffee maker. Some rooms are air-conditioned, and all of them have a fan.
Mornings begin with a buffet breakfast of vegetarian and Asian dishes, fresh fruit, juice and pancakes, and there is a restaurant and a coffee shop on site. Wi-Fi is free throughout, parking is free, pets are allowed, and car hire, bike hire and an airport shuttle can be arranged.
Ella waterfall view offers five room types, and they share a lot: every room has a private entrance, a private bathroom with shower, a balcony and a terrace looking over the garden and the mountains, along with a tea and coffee maker, a kettle, a desk, free toiletries and a hairdryer.
The difference lies in space and comfort. The three doubles of about 19 m² suit couples; the Family Room with Bathroom and the Deluxe Family Room offer around 32 m² for up to four guests; and the two Deluxe Double Rooms with Balcony, at 37 m², add a flat-screen TV, a minibar and a sofa bed. Every room has a fan, and several are also air-conditioned.
Life at Ella waterfall view is relaxed and centred on the outdoors. The garden, the terrace and the outdoor dining area are the places to linger, the restaurant and coffee shop are on site, and room service is available when you'd rather eat on your balcony. Guests can also use a shared kitchen, and barbecue facilities are available at extra charge.
For active days, bicycles and cars can be hired, public transport tickets can be booked and a shuttle, including to the airport, can be arranged at extra charge. Massages and spa treatments are offered for a fee. Wi-Fi is free in all areas, parking is free on site with a reservation, and pets are allowed at no extra charge.
Ella waterfall view sits in Kithal Ella, a small village on the edge of Ella in Sri Lanka's hill country. The town centre, with its cafés and restaurants, is about 1 km away, and the surrounding hills are laced with walking trails.
The nearest international airport is Mattala Rajapaksa, about 85 km away or roughly an hour and a half by car; from Colombo, the drive takes around five and a half hours. Many travellers prefer the famous hill-country train instead. Ella Railway Station is about 1 km away, some 20 minutes on foot or a few minutes by tuk-tuk, and the smaller Kithalella station is even closer. From Kandy the journey takes about seven hours: sit on the right-hand side for the best views and reserve seats well ahead in high season. The homestay can arrange car hire and, at extra charge, an airport shuttle, and free on-site parking is available if you reserve it.
Ella Rock is the classic hike: follow the railway line past Kithalella station, then turn off the tracks and climb to the summit, allowing about three hours there and back and setting off early, before the midday heat. A 15-minute walk along the tracks beyond the same station leads to Kithal Ella Falls, with natural pools at its foot. The Nine Arch Bridge, about 2 km away, is at its best around sunrise, before the crowds arrive; trains cross several times a day but rarely on schedule. Little Adam's Peak is a two-hour round trip through the tea plantations, and Ravana Falls lies about 6 km from Ella station. Take care whenever you walk on the tracks. January to May is the driest time and best for hiking, while September to December brings heavy monsoon rain and slippery paths.
